Joel Salatin Emcees Farm Food Voices 2008

The 2nd Annual Farm Food Voices DC, a national grassroots lobby day, took place on March 5th in Washington, DC. The purpose of the event was to engage federal legislators with the small, local, sustainable, consumer-supported, real food movement. Farmers, cheesemakers, bakers, restaurateurs and consumers from all over the country gathered for a legislative reception highlighted by an abundance of raw milk and other home-produced food products.  The event was bookended by a day of lobbying federal legislators to recognize that consumers want their food from unregulated small local farms and farmers want them to reject the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).

In his address to the crowd of consumers, farmers, legislators and legislative staffers, Joel Salatin spoke on the “price of cheap beef”. He reminded consumers to keep in mind the hidden costs of corporate farm subsidies, human health impacts, and impacts on the earth from insensitive farming practices when they are choosing between “cheap beef” at the grocery store and “real beef” from local farmers.

The event, hosted by the National Independent Consumers and Farmers Association and its affiliated organizations, was standing room only and included addresses by Congressmen Ron Paul and Bob Goodlatte.

This annual event will be held again in 2009.  We hope to see you there!
